Some of you know I have three kids. My youngest just turned 4 months old. He is just a perfect, happy, baby boy. This sweet boy started life with a small spot on his forehead. Having a sister with a similar feature at birth but in a different location, I knew what the doctors would say.
While sitting in the hospital, waiting for the pediatricians from the practice to stop in during rounds my husband and I talk about the "spot". The doctor comes in and in a very careful and solemn tone, tells us that "your son has something on his head that I want a specialist to check out."
Now, if I had been a first time mom I am pretty sure tears would have started flowing, my heart would be racing and I would go into a panic. As he is my third, I took the news much better. Now, we wait for the specialist.
"Hemangioma." As I suspected when I first saw him and the "spot". No, I am not a doctor but I am a mom who had another kid with the same thing. I am a firm believer that ALL babies have something at birth. Jaundice, hemangiomas, tongue tied, etc. And yet, they are still perfect!
What is a hemangioma? According to the Mayo Clinic, it is a birthmark that most commonly appears as a rubbery, bright red nodule of extra blood vessels in the skin. Many people refer to them as "strawberries".
Hemangiomas can be very small and harmless or they can be much scarier. It really depends on the size and location. Luckily for us, my little guy's seemed very small. It's location was not the best since it was right over his right eye brow.
The doctors warned me that it would most likely get larger and more prominent. "If it gets so large that it disrupts his vision, we will have to consider surgery."
Not exactly what a mother wants to hear.
Break out the Modern Essentials book! The protocol called for Geranium, Cypress and Frankincense. I had two of the three. Once we got over the jaundice, it was time to tackle "the spot".
At the East Coast Conference held in May, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. David Hill from doTERRA. I introduced him to my sweet baby boy and asked about the best treatment for the spot. He said my research was well done and geranium and frank would be the best way to go.
1 drop of each gently massaged into the area.
Geranium then Frank.
We have done this faithfully for 3 months. I have to say is spot is almost gone. At the pediatrician's office yesterday, the doctor said he was very impressed. Of course, he still thinks I am a bit crazy for believing in these oils but I can see the progress on my son's head. These oils work!
Here is the progression of "the spot". You can see for yourself. All this done, without harmful drugs or scary surgery. Sure he smelled a bit like little old lady with the Geranium but I know I feel much better about his aroma over scars and stitches.
A final photo for this entry, taken yesterday.
11/12/13: Update on my not so little guy these days:
As you can see, the spot is almost completely gone. The texture is flat. We do not get any comments or questions on "what is that?" The oils are truly amazing!
UPDATE: My little baby is not a baby anymore. He is 6! Can you all believe it? At Leadership in San Diego Dr. Hill and Andrew were able to meet again. It was the most fantastic moment of the entire retreat. I think we all cried a bit. The quote of the night was "It's remarkable! I am amazed how the oils worked for him. It's just remarkable." Then....Andrew told him and many other owners and leadership all about the Titanic. I think they realize just how powerful Frankincense really is now. It was probably more about that ship than they ever thought they would know. Such a fabulous day!

ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome testimony! What a difference!
ReplyDeletewow! that's so awesome, what a wonderful testimony!
ReplyDeleteMy baby has one on his nose. I have also been using oils to try to get rid od it ,but my biggest question is how many times a day are you putting them on? I would love to talk about it! sunshinefolkman@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWe only had to do it once per day.
DeleteEmail me at EssentiallySavannah@gmail.com! I would love to chat with you too.
This post is a bit misleading. My son was born with 2 of these, including one on his face, and they almost always go away on their own starting immediately.
ReplyDeleteThe one on his face was gone completely after a few months of age age without a single intervention.
I am glad your son's went away. My daughter had one on her neck and it took over a year to disappear. That is why I feel the combination of Geranium and Frankincense were very effective in my son's spot.
DeleteI was born with one on my left arm. Nothing was ever done.I am curious to see if it will diminish. I'm 62 years old now. I'm going to try it.
ReplyDeleteI would love to hear how it goes!
DeleteThe one on your child's face does not look like a hemangioma. My son has two very large ones. They look like the picture you posted under the description, not like your child's.
ReplyDeleteI am not a doctor but three doctors diagnosed him and the spot as a Hemangioma. Ultrasounds were done and advice was given. My oldest daughter had one as well but hers looked very different from my son's. I believe like people, they come in many shapes and sizes.
ReplyDeleteHow awesome! :)
ReplyDeleteMy 2 month old has one above his eyebrow. Can you use these oils directly on the skin of a baby that young, or should I mix them with coconut oil? I don't want to do anything that would hurt his sensitive baby skin (especially on his face).
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for posting this! My youngest daughter (now 8) had one in the middle of her forehead that started out just like your son's and eventually progressed to look like the one in the sample photo. It did go away on its own after a couple of years, but it would have been nice to have had doTerra back then to prevent it from growing. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteMy son's looked almost identical to your picture, but it was right under his hairline. He is 6 years old and it is still not completely gone. I'm glad I found this post I will be trying out some essential oils to see if we can get rid of it. I agree with you all children are perfect no matter what they are born with, but I know the bump on his head bothers him.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter now 3 was born with in the middle of her back towards the top. It did not look like any of these pictures but none the less I'm sure they come in different shapes sizes and color. A plastic surgeon looked and has identified it as such. However we are believers of the oils and will start them soon. They told us it would go away in time as well but as not diminished any over time. Thank you for post.
ReplyDeleteMy son is 3 months old and his is very similar to your Son's in look, size and location. Can the oils harm my son in any way? How many times a day and how many drops? Are you still putting the oils on it now that it has diminished? I have never used the oils but my cousin does and swears by them but I am still unsure about them being used on someone so small but they seem to be a much better option then what my doctors was suggesting. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteMy 2 year old daughter has a hemangioma on her lower lip. Are there any oils safe to use on her mouth?
ReplyDeletedoTERRA's Frankincense and Geranium are both safe for internal use but they are not the best tasting. You will probably want to be prepared for a 2 year old to complain.

DeleteCan these oils be applied ditectly or should I follow some dilution guidlines?
DeleteI applied directly but as I have learned more about dilution, I think that is a better option.
DeleteThank you, i am using 0,5% now for the newborn
